Duck Detective: The Hidden Salami's idea initially drew me in since I like playing video games that require me to solve puzzles and play detective. Nevertheless, I was ultimately a bit disappointed by how often I faltered when trying to piece together hints that didn't make as much sense as they ought to have.

Although Duck Detective offers Story Mode, which allows me to have a game hold my hand the whole time, I was astonished at how often I felt lost and compelled to hunt for assistance anywhere I could. Although Duck Detective has many positive aspects, my experience wasn't what I had hoped for.

Connecting the dots

When I solve a puzzle game and get that "aha" moment, nothing makes me happier. That instant when everything in my thoughts fits together like a jigsaw and makes sense. In Duck Detective, a cute game about a crime-solving duck entrusted with revealing the identity of the evil Salami Bandit along with numerous side mysteries, it didn't happen as often as would have wanted. The objective of the game was to collect clues by examining things and suspects, observe how the clues became simpler words, and then use those words to fill in the blanks in a fill-in-the-blank puzzle to figure out the conclusion. It has the sense of a condensed version of The Case of the Golden Idol's puzzle mechanism from 2022.

Although I like games like this, there are times when Duck Detective is so easy that I run into problems right away. It's difficult to describe, but I usually felt unsure of where to put the words in most deductions where I had them all prepared. The statements were so vague that they could be applied to anybody and anything, which often led me astray. However, there were a few intriguing deductions that I worked out on my own by examining the evidence and talking to individuals with distinct personalities.

In my notebook, I believed that I could solve puzzles more effectively by using the photos alone rather than the words that were meant to help me deduce the meaning of the clues. Ultimately, I found that going back to Story Mode helped me more than I had intended since it showed me which words belonged where. I could be the only player that has trouble deducing clues in Duck Detective, or it might happen often depending on how other players feel about solving puzzles in the game.

Since solving puzzles is such a subjective experience, it might be difficult to assign a numerical value. There are undoubtedly many amazing puzzle games where a small percentage of players are often stuck and lost yet the majority of players are able to solve the puzzles. I'm not sure where Duck Detective will take me, but in my own experience, I always felt like the clues weren't pointing in the correct direction.

A vibrant cast

Duck Detective has a colorful group of characters that I really enjoyed getting to know. Various amusing voice performers, each with their own distinct personalities and eccentricities, have portrayed each role. One might examine suspects for hints, give them hints and inquire about their thoughts to elicit further clues, or just have a conversation with them. I often got the impression that there were more questions I wanted to ask these suspects than I was permitted to, even though I knew this was a quick game with little complexity. There were moments when the suspects didn't provide me with the answers I needed, but I can't really blame the makers for not adding the option to ask certain questions that may reveal secrets too quickly. Occasionally, the game would lead me in a way that seemed like I should ask a suspect a crucial question, but either I was unable to ask them about it or I didn't get a clear response. It's true that detective work requires reading between the lines, but it was challenging for me to accomplish at times when I was struggling to recall how each person related to the others or when I was unsure of how to proceed with the information that was provided.I never knew who was innocent and who wasn't since the characters really give you the impression that anybody may be the culprit. I wouldn't argue that Duck Detective's characters are inherently flawed; rather, it seemed like they were a little too reticent. Maybe I'm the only one who feels this way, but based on my own experiences, I just wish I could find out more information from the characters and keep track of their interactions in my detective's notebook. I would often find out significant information regarding the feelings of one person toward another, but it would not be recorded for me. I suppose I should get out my reliable paper and pencil the next time.

Duck Detective: The Secret Salami's clever dialogue and distinctive art design are two more aspects I like. It was a fun experience because of the funny things that some of these characters said along with the gifted voice cast. It's surprising that this little duck with a fedora has such a deep voice, but it works well with the game's rather somber plot. It's just a Salami Bandit who stole someone's lunch, not a killer on the run. But, the offenses are much more widespread than you may imagine.Although the idea seemed ridiculous at first, I liked how some of these individuals are very bizarre as I was able to piece more of the story together. You have to make some difficult choices at the conclusion of the game since nobody is exactly who they seem to be. Duck Detective had several choices that I didn't anticipate, but it was a great touch to get the sense that my choices mattered.I really like how the characters looked like pop-up books. All of the characters are 2D objects in a 3D environment, seeming as if they were simply sketched on paper, cut out, and then inserted into this 3D environment. The personalities stand out more as a result of this stylistic decision, which is absolutely something to admire.

Duck Investigator: The Claim Salami wasn't a flawless experience for me; there were times when I felt confused and had to turn to Story Mode because the jigsaw pieces wouldn't fit together. The game was nonetheless enjoyable despite my infrequent epiphanies after completing deductions because to its clever characters and charming artwork. The tale was also deeper than I had anticipated, and the more I played it, the more I forgot about my difficulties with puzzle solving and started to enjoy the way the really funny and humorous mystery was revealed.
