The Elden Ring is rapidly approaching. Created by FromSoftware, Hidetaka Miyazaki, the creator of the Souls series, and George R. R. Martin, the author of Game of Thrones, it presents an action-packed adventure in an open-world setting that is both amazing and horrifying to see.
My experience is based on a 60-hour game, which I'll go into more depth about in our Elden Ring review. But it only applied to the single-player part of the game. The multiplayer feature was unavailable to me because of scheduling conflicts and level discrepancies.
The concepts of cryptic and bizarrely ambiguous plotlines are something that fans of Soulsborne, Souls, and Souls-like works are acquainted with, and this is what
The Lands Between this and that
Elden Ring adheres to. Characters and tooltips will begin telling you about the "War of Kerfuffle" for the "Erdthing Graceland," which will give you a headache. So let's make things easy. You take on the role of a Tarnished, an anonymous stranger with the potential to rule the Lands Between in the future. There are ten different classes to choose from, and each has unique beginning stats, weaponry, and equipment. The choices include casters such as the Confessor, the strength-focused Hero, and the Wretch (who is similar to the Deprived from the Souls games). Since you obtain a bow, I choose to play as the Samurai in my instance. My primary emphasis was on dexterity in order to wield a bow and rapid melee weapons.
You will then get to know a colorful group of people from there. There is Melina, the witch, who acts as your mentor at the beginning of the campaign. The Roundtable, which serves as the focal point, is home to many personalities. When you come across the enormous Two Fingers, a complete jerk of a seller, and a wandering witch, things only get weirder.
The objective is simple enough: defeat the five Shardbearers who possess Great Runes in order to become the Elden Lord. However, there are also several significant turns along the road (which I will not reveal in our evaluation of the Elden Ring).
Remarkable world
After then, you embarked on a vast, multi-regional open-world exploration. With its verdant fields and undulating hills, Limgrave's countryside serves as your starting point. Soon, you'll get Torrent, a horse that will let you travel more quickly and engage in mounted battle.
One of the game's Legacy Dungeons, Stormveil Castle, may finally be reached via the main route. To be clear, the map of Elden Ring already has mini-dungeons. In contrast, Legacy Dungeons are expansive structures that resemble labyrinths or castles and need hours to finish. The story arc's few boss confrontations serve as additional punctuation for them.
Your travels will bring you to Liurnia of the Lakes, an area of swamps inhabited by enemies that rise out of the depths. After that, you'll reach the corrupted wizards and sorcerers in the Raya Lucaria Academy. After this, well, we're not really permitted to reveal what occurs.
I can state with certainty that Elden Ring has one of the most exquisitely crafted worlds I have ever had the pleasure of exploring. Along the trip, there are many monuments, ruins, forts, cathedrals, secret passageways, and hidden objects to be discovered. The interconnection and excellent level design will wow you as you explore and find new locations. Furthermore, you'll be in awe by the campaign's atmosphere and images at various moments. There's a feeling of peace in the pitter-patter of rains on green pastures. Tension is created via ominous music and gruesome visuals on the lower levels.
Sword and board, along with a lot more
Like with Souls games, the core of Elden Ring is its fighting system. Thankfully, it does well in some areas. Numerous weapon kinds, shields, talismans, spells, and armor parts are all equippable. And you'll need them since even common foes will be difficult to defeat.
Whether you're timing a parry for that bone-crunching punch or perfecting a dodge for those lovely invincibility moments, it still feels great. Using stealth to surprise an opponent or breach their defenses results in a devastating critical finisher. Of course, you may cast spells for both defense and attack.
Similarly, the designs of the enemies vary from standard medieval knights to hideous creatures from dark fantasy clichés, such the very unsettling Scion or the massive Guardian Golems. Perhaps you will even encounter the Baba Yaga Bell Turtle. I like to refer to them as the enormous walking "houses" that have a bell that rings and a tortoise shell on them.
Bosses are huge, towering monsters that should be avoided since many of them have instakill powers. For example, while channeling a whirlwind, Stormveil Castle's boss, Godrick the Grafter, has the ability to deflect spells and missiles. He then begins using a slain dragon's head as a flamethrower during the second phase. You now need to be aware of whirlwinds that might burn your character. You'll encounter people who can change later on; some summon haunting phantoms, while others descend like a deadly meteor.
Friendliness towards novices
A crucial aspect of Souls and Souls both-like games in that they're often challenging and not for the weak. As you advance in Elden Ring, there are obstacles as well, but there are also elements that make the transfer easier for beginners.
Like in previous games, there are NPCs that may be called upon for certain battles. In order to harm and divert enemies, you may also use spells to call forth monsters or spirits. As previously established, Torrent speeds up traversal significantly, and you may locate Spiritsprings that propel your horse to great heights. In dungeons, there is also always a Site of Grace, also known as the Bonfire, so you may always find a place to resurrect in the event that you die—which will happen often.
There are several services offered by these Sites of Grace. One may level up by the standard means of using flask upgrades and runes, which are equivalent to Souls. Similarly, you may instantly alter the abilities of your weapons or remember and equip spells.
Moreover, those who play online alone will still be able to see messages and cautions from other players, even if I was unable to thoroughly test the most of the multiplayer features. If you're at a loss about where to go next or are stuck, they may be of great assistance. You may even invade people's domains to engage in PvP activity or beg them for assistance.
Masters of cheese and further matters
Nevertheless, Elden Ring still has a few problems. The first has to do with struggle and difficulty, or more specifically, how the latter is gotten around by lying. To be honest, there are cheeses in previous titles. Unfortunately, in the case of Elden Ring, this is made worse by the game's open-world design. Bosses may be easily avoided by buying a large number of arrows and using them to shoot enemies from a distance since they have an aggro range and don't regain HP until you die or rest. Of course, you could simply combat them the conventional way, but there's really no reason not to use a hassle-free approach.
The Ashes of War, or weapon talents, provide another problem. Although you may give your weapons additional skills, the system only allows you to activate one talent at a time—even if you have two distinct keybinds. For example, only the parry may be engaged using the keybinds if my shield can parry and my sword can make magical blades. I'm not even sure if it's feasible, but as of right now, I still haven't worked out how to utilize two talents for a one-hander and shield configuration. Regarding keybinds, you may access your flasks and potions, summoning spells, lantern, and horse mount by pressing the same button. If they had been kept separate for PC users, it would have been preferable.
Finally, there are a few noteworthy performance issues. To be fair, I can play at the top settings at 4K resolution and get between 50 and 60 frames per second on an Intel 10900K, Nvidia RTX 3080, and 32 GB of RAM. Regrettably, framerate dips and micro stutters may be rather problematic. Even though they only last a moment, they may sometimes startle me when they happen when I'm battling bosses or traversing precipices. Three-second freezes have also happened to me, although that's mostly because I've taken many screenshots with Steam. See our technical review for further information.
Setting the standard for next open-world games is Elden Ring.Ultimately, Elden Ring prevails in spite of all the odds. While still difficult for series aficionados, the campaign is also approachable for those just getting started.Elden Ring, with its locations you'll explore with a zeal, sets the standard for open-world games to come. You'll charge through breathtaking landscapes, explore hidden passageways to uncover mysteries, and scale the tallest peaks to defeat formidable opponents. I never felt like I was just going through the motions or that the design was predetermined. FromSoftware has really created something amazing and remarkable.
